TC19: Surface Properties

New strategy for future work of TC 19

The future work of TC19 should be more oriented as a market place for exchange of expertise. The members discussed the preparation of individual working groups, which present their work once a year. A time-line for participants to be agreed prior to the start of an activity.

There is a need to understand the reasons behind differences in measured data since through this understanding improved data quality can result. The current XRD round robin is a good example where the crystallite size differences between laboratories need to be understood.

TC19 provides networking opportunities with other members and with other Technical Committees. Links with other TCs could be strengthened.

All TC19 members have SEM and AFM and most have ToF-SIMS. These core techniques provide the means of engaging most participants although individual collaborations around other techniques could also take place.

Round robins are a tool to help with collaborations.

Actions in 2012 and planned activities for 2013

Organization of a Pharma Glass workshop at Berlin,March 2012:

"Unbreakable and chemically resistant glass especially developed for pharmaceutical applications" was cited as something that would be an exceptional success for the future by one of the participants of an ICG roadmap workshop which took place on March 12, 2012 in Berlin. Experts on glass surfaces and pharmacy met for a one day workshop to develop a first draft for a roadmap for future R&D in that field because it will be one of the most important glass applications in the future. The invited experts came mainly from industry and had special expertise in different areas.

To initiate more exchange between the glass and pharmaceutical communities, Volker Rupertus presented the main results of the workshop on the following day at the PDA Parenteral Packaging Conference, which took place in Berlin, Germany, on 13 - 14 March 2012. An additional outcome of the workshop is that the participants recommend the ICG to assign a TC for “Glasses for Pharma”. Additional discussions resulted in the creation of an initial plan of action for such a TC.

Reorganization of TC19:

In 2012 the 3rd term of Volker Rupertus as chairman of TC19 ended. Until a new TC chair is in place, Volker coordinated the TC activities as acting chair.
The decision for a new chairman is postponed to 2013.
The core group is focused on 2 people currently.
One new member has been recruited to the committee.

A new round robin was prepared, dealing again with XRD. The samples will be distributed in 1st Quarter 2013.

The submission of the revised EDS paper was postponed.

The chairman presented an account of TC19 Activities at 2 conferences.

Finishing the round robin “Glass-ceramic determination via XRD”: the Round Robin was completed and its status is described within a report.

Renewable actions for TC19: these activities were started during the meeting at Maastricht (June 2012).

TC19 was represented at CTC meetings by the chairman.
