TC19: Surface Properties

Vision of TC19

The future work of TC19 should be more oriented as a market place for exchange of expertise. The members discussed the preparation of individual working groups, which present their work once a year. A time-line for participants to be agreed prior to the start of an activity.

There is a need to understand the reasons behind differences in measured data since through this understanding improved data quality can result. The current XRD round robin is a good example where the crystallite size differences between laboratories need to be understood.

TC19 provides networking opportunities with other members and with other Technical Committees. Links with other TCs could be strengthened.

All TC19 members have SEM and AFM and most have ToF-SIMS. These core techniques provide the means of engaging most participants although individual collaborations around other techniques could also take place.

Round robins are a tool to help with collaborations.

Actions in 2017 and planned activities for 2018

A group of members met during the 12th Pacific Rim Conference on Ceramic and Glass Technology (PACRIM 12), including Glass & Optical Materials Division Meeting (GOMD 2017) of the American Ceramic Society which was held at Hawaii, May 21 – 26, 2017 and discussed (i) how to bring the researchers from broad communities to catalyze synergistic collaborations, (ii) plans to organize one-day session at the ICG 2019, Boston, (iii) possibility of organizing sessions in the ICG Summer School, (iv) importance of integrating modeling and characterization (modeling-assisted interpretation), and (v) an idea of teaming up with members of the Centre for Functional and Surface-Functionalized Glasses (

The committee is currently discussing round-robin studies of a few selected sample sets with some readily-available analytical techniques. The goal is to analyze a common sample by many groups and compare the results from different groups. In this way, we can investigate the spread of results for a given property, which can be disseminated to the technical community through publication in a peer-reviewed journal. An example could be the crystal size of crystalline domains in commercially-available FTO coating on float glass analyzed by XRD, EBSD, AFM, etc. Another example could be XPS or ToF-SIMS analyses of surface compositions or depth profiles of a float glass.

The Committee is planning to meet during the ICG Annual Meeting at Yokohama, Japan, on September 23-26, 2018. The committee will also discuss synergistic collaboration other TCs focusing on characterization and understanding of application-relevant surface phenomena.
