Prof Verner Vogel

Has recently passed away.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Dr. h.c. mult. Werner Vogel passed away March 10th, 2018, at the age of 92. Prof. Vogel was an outstanding and personality within the German glass community with high international reputation. Glass research was his scientific life's work. He was the Chair of Glass at Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, for many years, and essentially influenced glass development ate Glaswerke Carl Zeiss Jena. Most notably, he was able to advance the understanding of the characteristics of glass as a material and thus its areas of application quite considerably by using the electron microscope to investigate phase separation phenomena in the glass. His scientific experience found its expression in several books, among which, especially, the book “Glass Chemistry” enjoys worldwide dissemination. In 1991, he was honored for his life achievement by the bestowment of the Otto Schott Research Award. DGG will honor the memory of the departed.
